Bili – Working with search and rescue dogs Luna and Charlie

On 10 May 2022, Mr and Mrs Streda’s rescue dogs Charlie and Luna, who work for the fire brigade search and rescue squad as air scent dogs, visited us in the Bili-preliminary course. Before the dogs came, we had learned about the equipment of the dogs. Then some of us were allowed to try out what it is like to be a victim who is found by the dogs. In addition, Mrs. Streda explained to us how to plan an area search, for example, a forest area which has to be searched for a missing person. You always lead the dog in a 90 degree angle to the wind direction so that he does not have to search the whole area. With this tactic, they can search a forest area of about 30.000 square kilometres within 20 minutes. Subsequently, several children were allowed to hide on a large meadow with trees and bushes behind the school. A child was always allowed to lead a dog and give him commands. After that, the lesson was unfortunately over and at the end, Mrs Streda asked us a question: “How can you teach the dog to solve a problem like 2+2?” Do you know? The two dogs always knew the answers and barked the correct solution.
